The origin of flares seen by a Sydney-Brisbane plane near Casino on Saturday night was still a mystery yesterday.
Passengers on the north bound plane, saw what appeared to be distress flares at 7 p.m. and on arrival at Archerfield Aerodrome, Brisbane, Casino police were contacted. Messages were broadcast over 2LM, asking anyone in Casino district who had seen a plane in difficulties or showing flares as if in difficulties, to contact the police. No messages were received and no planes have been reported missing.
A Casino police officer said that it was now thought that the "flares" were sky rockets set off by children.
