ACUFO:

ACUFO is my comprehensive catalog of cases of encounters between aircraft and UFOs, whether they are “explained” or “unexplained”.

The ACUFO catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file.

Casino, New South Wales, Australia, on June 14, 1947:

Case number:

ACUFO-1947-06-14-CASINO-1

Summary:

This event went unnoticed, and is of moderate strangeness with little information. But if it had occurred a few months later, it would probably have had much more echo.

It was told in at least the two New South Walesm Australia, newspapers The Daily Examiner, and The Northern Star both for June 16, 1947, that "distress flares" had been seen on June 14, 1947, from a Sydney-Brisbane plane when it was near Casino, New South Wales.

Passengers on the north bound plane saw what "appeared to be distress flares" at 7 p.m. and on arrival at Archerfield Aerodrome, Brisbane, Casino police were contacted. Messages were broadcast asking anyone in Casino district who had seen a plane in difficulties or showing flares as if in difficulties, to contact the police.

But no messages were received and no planes have been reported missing, so the falres remained a mystery.

Though, a Casino police officer said "that it was now thought that the "flares" were sky rockets set off by children".

Distress "Flares" Mystery

The origin of flares seen by a Sydney-Brisbane plane near Casino on Saturday night was still a mystery yesterday.

Passengers on the north bound plane, saw what appeared to be distress flares at 7 p.m. and on arrival at Archerfield Aerodrome, Brisbane, Casino police were contacted. Messages were broadcast over 2LM, asking anyone in Casino district who had seen a plane in difficulties or showing flares as if in difficulties, to contact the police. No messages were received and no planes have been reported missing.

A Casino police officer said that it was now thought that the "flares" were sky rockets set off by children.

Aircraft information:

No information is given except that it was a civilian aircraft carrying passengers.

Discussion:

Casino is a town in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia, located 726 km north of Sydney. The town takes its name from Monte Cassino in Italy.

Map.

The newspaper [gde1] was not printed on Sundays; this is why the report about the June 14, event, appeared 2 days later.

Because no description of the "flares" and no information on how they behaved was reported, the case will remain a "mystery" with the possible solution of the kids party rockets.

Evaluation:

Insufficient information, possible toy flares.
